10 May Keeping families together – the Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa
The Intention
A new temporary sponsored Parent Visa is being introduced and will commence later in 2017. It will enable parents of migrants to live in Australia for up to 10 years. This new visa will:
- Allow Australians to sponsor their parents to stay in Australia for up to 5 years at a time.
- Assist in addressing migrant community concerns around existing parent visas, especially the long wait times.
- Assist with child care demands and reduce pressure on childcare places as working-age parents can return to work while the grandparents mind their grandchildren.
Requirements
- Sponsored parents will be required to hold, and maintain, adequate health insurance from an Australian provider for the duration of their stay in Australia.
- The sponsoring child will act as a financial guarantor for any outstanding public health costs incurred in Australia by their parent(s).
Current Parent Visa options
Current places under the permanent Parent migration programme for 2017-18 are maintained.
